Publish eBooks on Kindle – Step By Step Instructions

February 16, 2014

Previously, Homepreneurs detailed steps on how to publish eBooks on Smashwords.  Publishing eBooks is a simple way for a writer to make extra money by exposing their work to hundreds of millions of potential readers and/or buyers.  This is a great home business idea, provides a little extra money, and personal satisfaction too.  The process of self-publishing an eBook through Kindle is very simple.

eBooks will probably not be enough to earn a living.  In a previous post, I detailed the amount of money earned from SmashWords for 2013.  There are of course, exceptions to the rule.  Some authors do make a living from eBooks; are you the next exception?

This post covers publishing on Kindle, step-by-step.  Between SmashWords and Kindle, a large portion of the digital publishing market is available.to you, the writer.  Both services are free, so why not take a chance?  You can always publish under a pseudonym to avoid potential complications or issues.

In-Demand Home Business Idea – Financial Advisers

July 26, 2013

Sometimes the best home business options are in the news or on the Internet.  For instance, last week Marketwatch.com ran an article by Matthew Heimer titled: Will Your Adviser Retire Before You Do?

Piggy Bank

In the article, Heimer mentions the average American worker is between 35 and 44 years old.  Of the roughly 300,000 full-time financial advisers, the average age is about 50, with more than 20% over age 60.  Read more about this report in a report from consulting firm Accenture.

The issue:

Most financial planners and advisers will retire before workers are close to retiring.  This is a fact, based on Accenture’s findings.  Those in retirement or in their working years may have a hard time finding someone to help with investment decisions.

A solution:

Why not consider a career as a financial planner or adviser?  Homepreneurs has written about financial planning as a home business opportunity.  The demographic data suggest a pending demand for this occupation.

It is important to keep an eye on trends and current events – much can be learned about industry demands and home business options!

Home Business Update -VHS to DVD Conversion

March 7, 2013

Some time ago, Homepreneurs suggested VHS to DVD conversion as a home business option.  Not only is this business inexpensive to start-up, but with current technology, very easy to do.  Further, VHS players are all but gone, superseded by DVD, BlueRay, and tablet video.  VHS tapes also have a limited shelf life and affected by age, temperature, and tape-eating players.

This is an ideal business for a part-time entrepreneur.  One-time costs of software, cable, and devices (if not owned) and you are ready to set up shop.

I’ve noticed that Amazon local deals and GroupOn both offer deals from companies that convert VHS tapes to DVD.  One recent offer was 6 VHS tapes for $39, a savings of 70% off the regular price of $109.00.  Shipping and handling is extra, of course.   Further, only non-copyrighted material is converted, e.g. home videos.  Perform a little research on copyright laws and you may discover that single use (backup) copies of purchased materials are perfectly legal.

You don’t need to set up a national operation, but offer services locally via ads in newspapers and through word-of-mouth.  A simple solution to a problem for many.  Get some free business cards through VistaPrint and set up a free web site with Webs.com or Wix.com or even a free blog through WordPress.

Low start up cost, limited expertise required, and a problem in need of a solution.  Get started today!  By the way, this is a great job for high school and college students as well.

Home Business Idea – Real Estate Brokers and Sales Agents

January 9, 2013

Real estate brokers and sales agents help clients buy, sell, or rent properties. Brokers and agents do the same type of work, but brokers are licensed to manage their own real estate businesses. Sales agents must work with a broker.

Due to the complexity of buying or selling a home or commercial property, people often seek help from real estate brokers and sales agents. Although most real estate brokers and sales agents sell residential property, some sell commercial property, and a small number sell industrial, agricultural, or other types of real estate.

Brokers and agents can represent either the buyer or the seller in a transaction.  On occasion, an agent may represent both parties, but this is unusual and can be a conflict of interest.  Buyers’ brokers and agents meet with clients to understand needs and how much they can afford. Sellers’ brokers and agents meet with clients to help them decide on a selling price and to convince them that the agent or broker can find them a qualified buyer.

Approximately 60% of real estate brokers and sales agents were self-employed in 2010.  Most of the remainder worked in the real estate industry through brokerage offices, leasing offices, and other real estate establishments.  A broker or agent has some flexibility in working hours, making this a good position for part-time work, working mothers or retirees.

SmashWords eBook Best Sellers 1-4-2013

January 4, 2013

eBooks continue to sell at a remarkable rate: For 2012, SmashWords added 190,500 books to its library and 98,000 new titles were added to the Smashwords catalog.  This is up from 92,500 at the end of 2011, and up from 28,800 at the end of 2010, 6,000 in 2009, and 140 our first year in 2008.  This remarkable growth rate is expected to continue well into the future.

Homepreneurs believes that eBooks are a great way for writers of all genres, abilities, and interests to make additional money while pursuing personal goals from home.  While becoming a best-selling author via eBooks is unusual, it is not impossible.  And if best-selling is not ones goal, writing and publishing eBooks is one way to earn extra money on the side from the comforts of home.

Determining what eBooks people buy and related pricing is important.  To assist the reader with this research, Homepreneurs presents an updated list of the top-10 best sellers at SmashWords:
