Companies Actively Hiring People with Disabilities

Have a disability or medical condition? You are not alone. Many people with disabilities have contributed to society. These include actors, actresses, celebrities, singers, world leaders, and many other famous people.

A disability is often used to refer to individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment, mental illness, and various types of chronic diseases.

Of course there are also millions of people worldwide who may not be famous in the sense society deems famous, but still live with, battle, and overcome their disabilities every single day of their lives.

These lists are a constant work in progress and were created to prove that it is indeed possible to overcome the so called disability barrier. 1

Here are but a few from that list:

1) Vincent Van Gogh – artist – believed to have schizophrenia

2) Franklin Delano Roosevelt – 4-term US President – had Polio

3) Ron Santo – all-start MLB baseball player – had diabetes throughout his career

4) Joseph Hartzler – Oklahoma City Bombing Prosecutor – has Multiple Sclerosis

5) Stephen Hawking – Physicist -has  ALS (Lou Gerhigs Disease)

6) Terri Garr – American actress – has Multiple Sclerosis

This is a very small list of incredibly successful individuals that overcame tremendous physical issues.  Inspirations to us all, they prove the only limitation that disabilities provide are self-imposed.

In recent years, companies have learned value in hiring employees with assorted disabilities.  That thought has changed considerably in the past 20 years, in part because of the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in 1990.  Many private employers realize the value of disadvantaged individuals and actively recruit them.

Simply, disabled customers buy goods and services; companies better understand their needs by hiring the same.  Further, these same companies allow for greater work from home and flexible schedules to accommodate the workforce.  Companies with inclusive hiring programs provide a win-win-win scenario for themselves, the employees, and the community at large.

For opportunities with organizations with solid records in hiring individuals with disabilities, look at the Federal Government, your state and local governments, school districts, hospitals, and non-profit agencies.
