Energy consulting jobs aren’t the only home business opportunities that are available in a bad economy. Sometimes potential job seekers must be creative and find problems to solve. This post looks at careers that help others become more environmentally friendly or green. These are businesses that often involve consulting or freelancing and are good for Homepreneurs.
Difficult economic times call for resourceful solutions in cost savings in all areas. An important – and necessary – one is the environment and its treatment. The ‘green’ drive – re-using materials, alternative power, recycling – presents many opportunities for a motivated individual. Some options in this industry and for business start-ups are listed below.
– Remodeling: This is not exclusive to a down economy. Home and business owners often choose to remodel instead of moving, especially in the current economic climate. Foreclosures can be picked up for a low price; remodeled it may sell for a much higher price. This is a practice known as flipping a property. Though not currently a good option, real estate values will eventually recover and better homes will sell at higher prices. Also to consider when remodeling is green remodeling, creating more energy efficient and environmentally friendly rooms. For those interested in learning more try these two resources: National Association of the Remodeling Industry, and the National Association of Home Builders Remodelers Council .
– Environmental Cleanup: Including problems like mold, asbestos, radon, hazardous waste, and lead paint, cleanup and remediation are vitally important to the environment and health. Several organizations offer training and certification in these areas, a must when choosing this as a business. Consult the Environmental Information Association (EPA) for additional information and a list of training providers.
– Green Services and Consulting: Energy costs will continue to rise, driving demand for unique green services. These can include ride sharing services, bicycle repair and customization, and local recycling or computer disposal services. Many mentioned are appealing to local business as they attempt to be good corporate citizens.
