Homepreneurs and small business owners – especially start ups – have concerns and questions about planning and running a company. Multiple questions and comments prove knowledge is desired and necessary.
Today’s question is from SP, a Twitter (@homepreneurs) follower: Can you give me tips on getting a free domain and free hosting?
– Domain name – Domain names are hostnames that identify internet protocol (IP) resources such as web sites, e.g. Yahoo.com, DePaul.edu, Homepreneurs.net, etc.
– Domain registrar – A domain registrar is an accredited organization or commercial entity that sells and manages top-level Internet domain names for the public
– Hosting – Web hosting is a kind of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website available on the world wide web (www)
– Internet Service Provider – A company that provides access to the Internet via copper lines, wireless connection or fiber-optic cabling. Examples include: AT&T, Comcast, Hughes, and Dish.
Generally domain names are not free. GoDaddy.com charges $11.99 per year for new ‘.com’ domains. An Internet search did not result in any truly ‘free’ domain names; some names are free with a hosting purchase or an existing domain.
Once a domain name is chosen, a hosting service is selected. The domain registrar can be different than the hosting company, though package deals combing domains and hosting are common. The common domain registrars are netsol.com, register.com, and GoDaddy.com. Research each for the best price.
Regarding free hosting, Homepreneurs posted a recent article with a number of free hosting services. Bear in mind that advertising, support, and server storage may be limited. Examine each potential host carefully for the fine print.
No question is dumb or trivial. Each person interested in starting a business has concerns and needs to understand some business basics. Homepreneurs is happy to research and answer relevant questions asked.
